Acne is the most common skin disease in the country. While it is most common in teenagers, adults of any age can have it as well.
Acne occurs when sebaceous (oil) glands become active, typically around puberty. These glands are stimulated by male hormones that are produced in the adrenal glands of both young men and women. The oil glands are continuously producing oil as it secretes through openings in the skin (pores), lubricating the skin. Under the right conditions, cells that are close to the openings of the oil glands create a blockage. This causes an oil buildup beneath the skin. Bacteria devour the oil and multiply, thus causing inflammation of the surrounding tissue.
Many different types of acne exist. These include non-inflammatory acne, such as blackheads and whiteheads, and inflammatory acne, such as papules, pustules, and cysts.
Treatment for acne depends on the type and severity of lesions, as well as the patient's skin type, age and lifetyle.
